Immigration Changes for September

Canada’s immigration climate has been a little unpredictable. From LMIA changes to IRCC changes, there is no knowing what tomorrow will look like in terms of immigration in Canada. Luckily we here at CanPR stay up to date with all things immigration so you don’t have to! Here are the recent immigration updates for September that you should know.

IRCC Changes
  • There is a cap on study permits given to international students, and the government's aim is to reduce study permits by 300k by 2026.
  • There are housing shortages in Toronto and Vancouver and the goal is to alleviate this crisis in major cities
  • Starting on November 1st 2024 there will be stricter language requirements for PGWP applicants.
  • CLB 7 is required for university graduates and CLB 5 is required for college graduates. The goal with this new change is so that people can seamlessly integrate into Canadian society and the workforce.
  • PGWP eligibility will be tightened and there will be a reduction of 175k permits over the next three years
  • Spousal work permits will only be available to people in high demand programs, there will also be a reduction of 50k spousal permits within the next three years

LMIA Changes
  • There will be a pause on low wage LMIA in areas with unemployment rates of 6% or higher (jobs in critical sectors are exempt from this pause)
  • Employers can now only hire 10% of their workforce through the TFWP (temporary foreign worker program), the cap was previously 20%
  • Employment in the low wage stream has been reduced from two years to one year
  • These changes are put into place to prioritize Canadian workers and stop reliance on temporary foreign workers.
